Description
An exceptional example, the hilt wrought in bronze, heavily silvered and finely embellished with rectangular panels of vinework with roped borders and a fully-modeled tigers head with ears, eyes, nose, numerous teeth and a large mustache, and bearing a lengthy inscription in Gujarati characters. The grip and forearm strap of steel. The massive blade long, straight, double-edged and of flattened hexagonal section, struck with the maker’s name LAGANA at the obverse forte and a crowned T on the reverse for Toledo. First half of the 18th century. Wear to silver, minor repaired perforation to cuff, blade with areas of pitting. Overall length 123.5cm. Condition III
