Description
A seldom-encountered example of characteristic form, in fine condition. Circular, and lightly domed, the body formed of a tightly-wound spiral of cane, intricately wrapped in colored silk in complex geometrical patterns. With large, domed steel boss set with a spike at the center, from which radiates a series of wrought iron ribs fastened at the rim, and retaining the tasseled fringe which was flicked in the face of an opponent in order to confuse him. The reverse with original lining and plaited leather grips. With original leather suspension strap. Mid-19th century or earlier. Diameter of buckler 27cm. Deaccession from the Dukes of Northumberland Collection in the 1980s. Condition I
