Description

Likely French, the guard of complex form, wrought of brass with a series of branches meeting at the large, stepped hemispherical pommel, strongly evocative of a Highland hilt, with drooping forward quillon. The grip retains its tight brass wire wrap and well-formed turkshead knots. The fine, long, double-edged German blade with flattened ricasso and short double fullers at each edge struck four times on each side with the mark of a king’s head of famed German maker Mathias Wundes of Solingen, interspersed with A N D R E A on the left side and F A R A R A on the right. First half of the 18th century. Minor wear. Overall length 102.5cm. Condition III
