Description
A rare example of early Afshar Dynasty work, the karabela hilt with antler grips carved in chevrons and steel guard of characteristic form, displaying curled quillons with monsterhead terminals. The massive blade of Turkic form, well forged of actively-grained Persian black wootz damascus steel, fullered and with expanded yelman, with a panel of gold inlay at the forte reading, OWNER HAJJI HASSAN and ALLAH GRANTS VICTORY TO HIS SERVANTS! together with another at the midpoint of the blade calling upon the hero ALI. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with embossed and silvered locket and chape and steel suspension bands inlaid with gold. Second quarter of the 18th century. Locket and chape working life additions. Well worn overall. Overall length 96cm. Condition III
