Description
A seldom-encountered example with identifying inscription, the dark horn grips with fingerstalls, the guard with pierced ecusson bordered in gold inlay. The fine, broad blade of shallow curvature with dramatically expanded and serrated yelman or back edge, wrought of very fine Persian black wootz and inscribed in well-chiseled and gold-inlaid cartouches at either forte including, I TRUST IN ALLAH! Together with two names HASSAN and WAKIL, and WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH ISFAHANI. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with gilt thread embroidered flower panels, with finely profiled steel mounts with pierced panels outlined in gold en suite with the hilt, together with a hinged steel gate at the throat inlaid in gold, EMIRATE OF BUKHARA. First half of the 19th century. Owning and carrying arms in Bukhara were controlled by specific sumptuary laws, which limited them to high ranking ministers and heroes. Most were presented or ordered by the ruling Emir. General wear, mounts with areas of brown rust. Overall length 94.7cm. Condition III
