Description
A very rare example of parade armor found almost exclusively in Eastern Europe, particularly the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Hungary, Ukraine, Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia, and traditionally worn by kings, princes, voievods, and other rulers on parade, military review or state occasions. Composed of a very fine coat of mail wrought in a particular manner: tiny steel rings (5mm dia.) each riveted and bordered with fine brass rings retained by an additional row of riveted iron rings. The obverse set with a series of five clasps, each with a pair of massive gilded, modeled and pierced ornaments set with precious stones, including garnet, jade, and carnelian, the clasps of parcel-gilt silver. The hem studded with Polish-Lithuanian poltorak silver coins, each struck with the arms of the Commonwealth on the obverse and an orb on the reverse, and dating c. 1600-1650. With its later velvet tunic. First half of the 17th century. Minor losses to rings. MANNEQUIN NOT INCLUDED. Overall length 78cm. Condition II
