Description
An exceptionally fine example, the body a coco-de mer, or sea coconut (LODOICEA MALDIVICA, ) superbly carved overall in scrollwork and set with semiprecious stones, mounted in hallmarked silver. Many such coconuts were carved by French prisoners of war loyal to Napoleon following his surrender in 1815. They were then sent to Paris and sold for what they would bring in order to support themselves and their families. Early 19th century. Minor losses. Overall length 13cm. Condition II
