Description
A finely-embellished element of armor known as a “piece of advantage” for the tilt, wrought in copper and heavily silvered overall. Designed to protect the left shoulder and arm from the impact of a lance, and elaborately embellished with intricate engraving overall, the massive lattice providing panels containing diverse antique arms on fields of flowering vinework. Bears a museum inventory number on the reverse. For quite similar see the suit now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., 27.159.1a–p. Mid-19th century. Overall height 43cm. Condition II
