Lot 205:
Description
A massive example of the type, strongly associated with the Black Sea Cossacks, the distinctive octagonal grip of typical form with silver wire wrap. The obverse lavishly engraved and nielloed in bold flowering vine motifs on a matted ground with large, star-shaped bosses, the reverse finely embellished with engraved and nielloed mounts in an imbricated design in the manner of scales, with domed bosses. The broad, parallel-edged blade with tapering point, forged with a single central fuller to either side and struck with a spade-shaped maker’s mark. First half of the 19th century. Minor damage to reverse silver pommel cap and locket, scabbard tip possibly replaced in period. Overall length 47.5cm. Condition II
