Description
A superior example of a rare type, the wooden tree covered in red and black tooled leather, the pommel, cantle, and front and rear panels framed in finely engraved, nielloed and gilded silver, the pommel and cantle depicting the tamga (family mark) of the owner, recorded as ECENEI DUMANOV, an uzden (noble) in the Zolsky region of Circassia in the latter 1860s. The leather saddle skirts elaborately tooled in traditional motifs. The skirt, stirrup and baggage straps all of leather with fine nielloed silver mounts. The dark brown, handstitched leather saddle pad and rare, finely-crafted seat cushion and cinch strap with nielloed silver buckles complete and intact, as are its original steel stirrups of classical Caucasian form, beautifully inlaid in characteristic motifs in silver overall. First half of the 19th century. Minor wear and rubbing to silver, pad torn in spots. Saddle length from pommel to cantle 40cm.
