Lot 188:
Description
German work, the hilt of characteristically complex form, the transitional guard with broad, slightly drooping quillons and intertwining rings, all finely chiseled with flower panels and terminating in large, wrenched beads, the massive pommel en suite, the wooden grip stepped at the midpoint and retaining its original leather covering over fine cord wrap. The finely wrought, long blade of extremely rare type, single-edged, with thick spine and single broad fuller, tapering continuously to an acute, radiused tip, with a deeply struck German “bee” maker’s mark at the left forte. Mid-16th century. Areas of minor pitting, leather rubbed. Overall length 121cm. Condition III
