Description
Of characteristic form, the hilt wrought of silver, the wooden grip with stingray covering. The robust, handwrought blade straight, single-edged and expanding slightly toward the tip, with engraved geometrical motifs to either side. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver mounts. 19th century. The Amazons of Dahomey were admired and respected throughout the world. Both French and British visitors to the Kingdom of Dahomey wrote of their bravery, skill in battle and stature in the kingdom. Note that the Amazons in the last photo c. 1900 wear swords of the same form, particularly far right and second right. PHOTO NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS LOT.Worn overall, chape damaged.
