Description
Of characteristic form with bifurcate hilt carved of a single section of pale horn, and rare ferrule in the form of a triple crown wrought of high karat gold, engraved and enameled, with integral bolster and fine polished, single-edged, blade with fuller and radiused tip, wrought of superb pattern-welded damascus steel. In its well-carved and elaborately-tooled wooden scabbard inscribed in the Acenese language in Jawi script: "THIS IS THE HEIRLOOM [? ] OF TEUKU KALIT MAT SAID, TO WHOM THIS SIKIN PANJANG BELONGS. Such swords were reputedly to be wrought only in the Royal Workshops by permission of the Sultan of Aceh. The Teuka Kalit was an official appointed directly by the Sultan, in this case a courtier and high official named Mat Said. Mid-19th century or earlier. Overall length 71cm. Condition II
