Description

Mughal work, with persianate wrought steel hilt with knucklebow terminating in a fully-modelled parrots head, with ruby eyes, finely inlaid overall in complex flowering vine motifs in gold and silver. The fine, robust Persian heirloom blade forged of black wootz, and finely inlaid at each side of the forte with profiled panels inlaid in gold and silver en suite with the hilt, the right side bearing the inscription, LA FATTAH ILLAH ALI LA SAIF ILLA ZULFAQAR (There is no hero but Ali and no sword but Zulfaqar!) and the date 1225 (1809/10 C.E.) In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with mounts of steel inlaid in gold and silver en suite with the hilt. Dated 1809/10. Minor wear, velvet refreshed. Overall length 91.5cm. Condition II
