Description
Very seldom encountered, a complete Ottoman officers set, comprising a turban, shirt (gomlek, ) jacket (cepken, ) padded waist band (kushak, ) and weapons belt (silahlik.) The turban of green silk and brown velvet, with original lining. The homespun shirt with tie at the neck, the black velvet jacket of fine quality, with overlapping lapels and long sleeves, with numerous intricately embroidered panels and braided silver-thread buttons. The broad kushak with fine, organically-dyed panel hand-woven with Ottoman motifs and stitched to a heavily-padded leather belt secured with a series of buckles at the reverse. The silaklik of complex form, composed of numerous layers of leather laced tightly together and forming pockets and slips, each with scalloped edge, into which the yataghan, dagger and pistols, together with other weapons and accoutrements were placed. Embellished with leather appliques in contrasting colors in geometrical patterns, and retaining its leather straps with brass buckles. Length of silahlik excluding straps 42cm. condition. 19th century. Turban showing much wear, shirt with period darned repairs, jacket with rubbing, wear, minor holes and tears, waist band with minor wear, silahlik with minor wear, iron buckle tongues corroded.
