Likely Flemish or Dutch. Of peascod form, which emulated the design of fashionable doublets of the period. Wrought from a single thick plate of steel, with distinct central ridge terminating in a characteristic drooping lower edge, with rolled and roped edges and a clever period reinforce at the lower left. Retaining its original roped buckles at each shoulder, and struck with a clear maker?s mark of a crowned orb containing an F on the upper chest. With characteristic hammer marks to the interior and visible delaminations. Latter 16th century. Areas of minor pitting. Overall height 54.9cm. A type closely associated with British, French and Spanish exploration in the New World. Condition III
