Description
An extremely scarce example, a 16th century Imperial Russian form which persisted in use for centuries in the Siberian hinterlands, the wooden stock with faceted butt and decorated bone plate, retaining considerable original finish with areas of painted decoration intact, the characteristic lock with engraved details and massive, profiled sear (release.) The furniture handwrought of steel, brass and copper. The thick-walled, small caliber, octagonal barrel inlaid with silver and well-rifled. Complete with its rare original wooden bipod retained by a large handwrought bolt and period woven accessories bag, containing a bullet mold, flint striker, brass powder measure and characteristic powderhorn with flexible leather neck and horn spout. 18th ? 19th century or earlier. The first recorded examples of this type of weapon in Russia occurred during the late 16th century. They were rugged, reliable weapons popular amongst Cossacks, Mongolians, Buryats and others, remaining in use, formally unchanged, until the late 19th century. Overall length of rifle 90cm.
