Description
An exceptional example of German work, wrought entirely of steel, the head composed of seven profiled steel flanges, rather than the more typical six; each flange slotted and copper brazed to the tapering octagonal haft, which expands toward the butt, incised with bands defining the grip with fine and unusual panels of acorns on undulating branches chiseled in relief and pierced for a lanyard. The expanded and profiled butt with button finial. Latter 15th century. Areas of minor pitting. Provenance: Ex- Sotheby?s, New York– European ?Works of Art, Arms and Armour?
