Description
Described by George Cameron Stone in his seminal Glossary as the one of the earliest forms of pata. Tanjore work, wrought entirely of steel, composed of a characteristic guard terminating in a makara head retained by recurved straps to the siderails, with characteristic transverse grips. With profiled brass burred-rivets and bead finials and remains of brass inlay. The extended, profiled reinforce retains a long, straight, double-edged blade of lenticular section with tapering point, showing traces of complex forging, possibly wootz. 16th ? 17th century. Well-worn overall, partial loss to one strap, corrosion to blade. Overall length 95cm. Condition IV
