Description
A rare example of earlier form, the hilt with translucent horn grips and gilded guard, the mounts elegantly engraved in Ottoman geometrical and vine motifs and gilded overall. The broad, T-section blade showing evidence of possible wootz construction, wrought with a narrow fuller at either side of the spine and intricate panels of rumi vinework chiseled in relief at either side of the forte upon a gold ground, and inscribed in gold and silver, at the right forte, ALLAH, HOLY ALI! O ALLAH, O KING! and at the left forte, O LIGHT HASSAN! with an additional relief-chiseled panel on a gold ground at either side of the yelman. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard wire seam closure and large, gilded mounts decorated en suite with the hilt. Second half of the 18th century. Minor wear, slight dent to chape. Overall length 82.5cm. Condition III
