Description
Seldom encountered, Polish or Hungarian work of classic form, the brass mounts comprising a distinctive pommel cap and symmetrical guard, the long quillons with expanded terminals and langets with a thumbring to the ecusson. The corded wooden grip with fingerstalls, covered in black leather and set with brass rosettes, the original brass knuckle chain intact. The long, robust, finely forged and single-edged blade with narrow fullers and back edge, etched at the forte with baroque panels and the Christogram IHS (the acronym for Jesus Christ, ) together with a cross terminating in the Sacred Heart. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with pierced and profiled brass mounts. First half of the 18th century. Light wear overall, minor loss to grip leather, period repairs to guard. Overall length 98.5cm. Condition II
