Description
An extremely large and rare Qajar example made for presentation, possibly to the Ottoman Sultan. The hilt with desirable, fibrous horn grips and solid silver guard and tangband, superbly and elegantly embossed and engraved with Persian lions amongst foliage. The broad, T-section blade with fine and extensive etched panels and silver-inlaid borders to either side, inscribed O Shah Sultan Tahmasp, O Shah Sultan Adil, together with the names of other important Persian rulers. Wrought of fine Persian wootz, with fullering at the spine and chiseled panels at the yelman or back edge. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with massive silver mounts decorated en suite, with Persian lions amongst complex foliage. 19th century. Velvet worn. Overall length 97cm. Condition II
