Description
Rajput work, formed of thick hide in circular, slightly domed form and lacquered black overall. With four bosses, with fine images of Hindu deities overall, expertly rendered, primarily in gold leaf with black details. Surya, the Sun God is depicted at the center, surrounded by nine goddesses (including one with the head of a wild boar, ) each named in Devanagari beneath and riding various animals, wielding numerous weapons in their multiple arms. The vinework border likewise executed in gold. 18th-19th c. Well worn, with rubbing and crazing, some restorations. Diameter 50.5cm. Condition II
