Description
The grip carved of a single section of walrus, delicately inlaid in elegant vinework in gold and silver, with filigreed and gilded silver ferrule. The scabbard composed of elaborately filigreed and gilded silver with nielloed borders, set with large walrus panels inlaid in fine gold vinework en suite with the grip. The reverse engraved and nielloed overall in flowering vine motifs with geometrical borders. The straight, double-edged blade with triple fullers on either side terminating above the acute tip, the forte struck with a makers mark. Mid-19th century. Period repair to grip. In the Caucasus, the kindjal was both a weapon and a primary accoutrement of personal prestige. Overall length 49.5 cm. Condition III
