Description

The armor of a commander, with tall, conical bowl wrought from heavy copper and silvered, with robust iron nasal crescent set screw, and elaborately-embellished brass finial with five terminals evoking the Five Pillars of Islam. The long, heirloom camail of fine, riveted rings, retains its rare patchwork trade cloth lining. With its matching Persian heirloom steel armguards with worn panels of gold inlay, wrist plates and padded liners intact. Comprehensively Mid-late 19th century. Well worn overall. Local arms workshops in the Sudan during the Mahdiyya were virtually unknown. The distinctive jibba tunic was the only recognizable garment. Even edged weapons were reportedly rare; locally made armor was almost unknown. Overall height of helmet with camail 60cm. Condition IV
