A quality example, the hilt with translucent horn grips and silver guard and tangband elegantly engraved in Ottoman geometrical and vine motifs. The broad, T-section blade wrought of boldly-patterned wootz with a finely wrought fuller at either side of the spine and elaborate gold inlay panels and inscriptions to either side of the forte including MASH’ALLAH! (God’s blessing!) and ALLAH, MUHAMMAD HOLY ALI! In its blue velvet-covered wooden scabbard with gilt braid binding and large silver mounts decorated en suite with the hilt. First half of the 19th century. Minor wear, slight chipping to grip, light wear to gold. Overall length 89.5cm. Areas of the blade suggest a more complex wootz pattern may become apparent with polishing. Condition II
