The characteristic weapon of the Lhoba People of the Kham region in Eastern Tibet, with faceted cylindrical iron pommel inlaid with rectangular panels of brass and copper and retained by three spiked studs, the wooden grip with original woolen cord wrap, the circular iron guard with deeply flanged edge. The blade long, straight and thick, forged in the traditional “hairpin damascus” style of the region, in which the blade is made from a series of layers, each bent in the form of a V and laid one inside the next before forging. With radiused tip, and retaining considerable original sharpness. In its wooden scabbard covered in worn red wool fabric with long hide mounts, the chape retaining much original fur and a hoof, indicating it was made from the leg of a goat. The locket with embossed silver loop which retains the sling, together with a leather fringe. Latter 19th century. Grip and scabbard rubbed and worn. Overall length 95cm. Condition III
