Description
Likely Spanish, the cup with elegant scalloped and pierced rim and profiled guarda polvo, the quillons quite long and slender, the ecusson profiled, the knucklebow connected to the foliate-chiseled pommel by a bolt. The grip with original elaborate brass wire wrap with scalloped upper ferrule. The long, narrow blade of flattened diamond section with short, well-wrought fullers struck on each side with a Latin inscription, SPERAVI NIE DOMINE (MY HOPE IN THEE, LORD- Psalms 38:15) Mid-17th century. Cup possibly replaced in period, pitted, cleaned. Overall length 121.5cm. Condition III
