AUCTIONS IMPERIAL 2023 MAY
Lot 218:
Description
The hilt and reinforces wrought entirely of silver, finely embossed and chased in Ottoman baroque motifs. The well-wrought blade struck with a makers mark. In its blue silk-covered wooden scabbard with gilt braid seam, and large, finely embossed and engraved silver mounts en suite with the hilt, with flowering vinework surrounding a pair of lions (seemingly, ) and a massive palace, that on the left unlocking its gate with a key, the other perhaps exhaling fire onto it—likely a popular reference to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople—and inscribed MASHALLAH! (Gods Blessing!) and the year, 1222 (1806/7 c.e.) Dated 1806-7. One pommel top repaired in period, minor pitting to blade, several small, stable cracks to scabbard mounts. Overall length 70.9cm. Condition II
