Description
Of characteristic Balkan form, the large-eared hilt and mounts wrought entirely of silver, superbly embossed and engraved in characteristic geometrical and flowering vine motifs overall, the tangband accomplished in silver filigree set with corals. The well-wrought blade with elaborate silver inlay including the name of the smith WORK OF ABD AHAM (?) as well as that of the patron, OWNER HALIL AGHA and the date: YEAR 1213 (1798 c, e, ) maker’s mark. Dated 1798. In its en suite silver scabbard with silver locket executed entirely in filigree in high relief with fine embossed and chased vinework motifs throughout, with old applied leather panel at the lower end and engraved silver tip. The exceptional level of jeweler’s skills are among the best work of the period. Overall length 78.3cm. Condition II
