Description

Also known as a dusack or tesak, an early example with complex hilt, the broad crossguard with drooping, expanded quillons terminating in tulips, from which branch a pair of ring guards, the outer supporting a knucklebow of two robust bars connected by branches. The pommel of distinctive mushroom form designed both to lock the hand and protect he fingers, all of the hilt elements profiled, the guard with balusters and beading, the ergonomic grip retaining its complex twisted iron wire wrap. The blade of characteristic saber form, broad and of wedge-section, with shallow curvature and expanding at the tip, with back edge, and further engraved with a rectangular cartouche terminating in trefoils and struck with a series of armorers marks. Third quarter of the 16th century. The hilt overcleaned, blade with areas of pitting. Overall length 93.3cm. Condition IV
