Description
Made for a datu or chief, likely in Maguindanao. Composed of a series of solid brass plates which completely cover the body nearly to the knee, intricately interconnected by heavy, hardened bronze rings, the large central plates set with silver mounts comprising 18 flowers, six leaf clusters and a pair of clasps, all decorated in okir work. The sleeves terminating in points, wrought of finer rings than those of the body. Second half of the 19th century. Minor wear. Overall length from nape to hem 65cm/ 25.5”. Nid-19th century or earlier. The Moros adopted plate and mail armor worn buy Persian and Indian traders in the 15th-16th century. It was both flexible and strong, allowing a warrior to both run and fight while stopping sword and spear attacks.
