Description
Of classic close-hilt form, the steel mounts comprising an oval pommel cap and symmetrical guard with integral knucklebow, the long, faceted quillons with tapered terminals and corded wooden grip covered in black leather. The exceptionally long, robust, well-forged, single-edged blade with pronounced back-edge, struck at either forte with a maker mark, probably that of Solingen smith Johannes Beugel (active 1648-1688.) In its leather-covered wooden scabbard embellished with an undulating iron snake captured by the profiled brass mounts. Mid-17th century. Worn overall. Overall length 101.6 cm/ 40 inches. Condition III
