Description
A rare example of characteristic form. The karabela grip carved of a single section of shirmani and set with brass studs. The brass guard of characteristic form with expanded, bifurcate quillon terminals. The wooden scabbard covered in dark sharkskin with characteristic diminutive profiled and engraved brass mounts, the suspension bands retaining a period woven sling terminating in silver wire-wrapped tassels. The blade of a distinctive type exported by the Ottomans throughout the Mediterranean, short, and narrow for much of its length, with narrow fullers and a T-back which expands into a broad, back-edged tip, struck at the forte on each side with a series flowers interspersed with marks resembling Cyrillic letters. Beginning of the 18th century. Worn overall. Blades of this form are often found in Algerian naval nimcha sabers. Overall length 81cm/ 31.9”. Condition II
