Description
The fine Delhi-style hilt engraved overall in intricate vegetal motifs, lavishly gilded throughout and inscribed in a fine Nastaliq had at the underside of the disk pommel the poetic Persian phrase, THE SWORD OF THE BRAVE ONE GOETH EVER TO THE FORE! The blade forged of fine black wootz damascus steel, with two chiseled cartouches at the right forte, the upper containing the name and titles of Shah Abbas of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET (two Safavid shahs bore this name: Abbas I, r. 1588-1629, Abbas II, r. 1642-1666) and the lower with WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH. First half of the 17th century. Overall length 91cm/ 35.8”.
