Description
Mughal work, the steel hilt with lobed pommel, swollen grip and fleuretted quillon terminals, the knucklebow terminating in a birds head, and finely inlaid in flowering vine motifs in gold and silver overall and inlaid with garnets. The fine, curved, single-edged Persian shamshir blade wrought of actively-patterned silver and gray wootz showing incipient steps and inlaid with a polygonal cartouche at either side of the forte, that on the right with the Quranic quotation, Sura of Victory 110:1, VICTORY FROM ALLAH AND CONQUEST NIGH! and at the right forte, a prayer to the hero Ali. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with en suite chape (detatched.) First half of the 19th century. Worn overall, velvet heavily rubbed, tip broken off and retained by wire. Overall length 87cm/ 34.25”. Condition III
