Description
A fine and unusual example, quite large. Lavishly mounted in superbly filigreed, embossed and engraved silver, with distinctive peaked pommel. The well-wrought blade broad, lightly curved and double-edged with a pronounced central ridge, forged of actively-patterned Istanbul Baiaz wootz. The scabbard wrought entirely of silver, decorated in embossed and applied work with beaded borders and large, spherical finial, struck near the throat with an Ottoman tugra silver mark. 18th-19th-century. Overall length 61.6cm/ 24.25”. A scarce type which appears to be the antecedent of some earlier examples of the Meccan Dharia type, while the work on the scabbard likely inspired those found on later Kurdish types. Condition II
