A high-quality example of characteristic form, made for a Ras, or member of the Ethiopian nobility, and carried at the Emperors court. The body covered in velvet and elaborately set with numerous embossed, engraved and gilded mounts, with a stylized sun at the center. The reverse with leather lining and original grip intact. Late 19th century. Worn, losses to leather. Diameter 43.3cm/ 17”. Condition III
