Description
The hilt well-wrought, cup with rolled border, the knucklebow and guard with flattened and beaded terminals and wrought in one piece with the guard, and spherical pommel with flanged base. Wooden grip with corded wrap retains its original copper turkshead knots. The long, straight, double-edged blade of hexagonal section with fuller to either side struck with the makers name, TOMAS AIALA, with TOMAS at the left forte and AIALA at the right, together with cabalistic marks, and outlined with the engraved rosary often found on good blades. First half of the 17th century. Isolated areas of age darkening and light pitting, grip wrap replaced. Overall length 121cm/ 47.6” . The unified construction of guard and cup is a characteristic often found on Portugues hilts. Condition III
