Description
Likewise called as Mortuary or Cromwellian sword, an above-average example with steel basket hilt of characteristic form, very finely chiseled, pierced, and profiled throughout in complex flowering vine and gallery work, with small, profiled, semicircular langets as is typical. The wooden grip with most original leather and wore twisted wrap intact. The pear-shaped pommel chiseled with complex geometrical galleries en suite with the guard. The exceptionally long, broad blade straight and single-edged with a long false edge, and wrought with three fine narrow fullers, each bordered by three makers marks at each side of the forte and retains considerable edge. Second quarter of the 17th century. Leather worn with losses, areas of light pitting. Overall length 111cm/ 43.7”. Condition III
