Description

Of characteristic form, the single section elephant butt decorated with birdseye motifs. The walnut stock inlaid with scrolling silver wire and finely inlaid with numerous large profiled and engraved silver plaques of complex form, and set with corals. The fine miquelet lock inlaid with engraved brass and dated 1209 a.h. (1794 c.e.). The silver mounts bear two additional inscriptions dating to its later presentation, THIS IS THE WORK OF MUHAMMAD SON OF THE GIFTED IN YEAR 1294 (1876/77 c.e.) and IN THE VILLAGE OF TRISI MESKIANA dated 1294 a.h. The exceptionally long, octagonal barrel with silver breech and profiled sight, struck with a collection number, and retained by finely embossed and engraved silver bands with illegible signature. Retains its hardwood ramrod. 19th century. Minor rubbing, slight losses to silver wire. Overall length 182cm/ 71.45”. Meskiana is located in northeastern Algeria, in Oum Al Bouaghi province. The region saw action against invading French forces between 1827-37. Condition II
