Description
The horn grips with nielloed silver mounts. The broad, bifullered blade with single offset fuller to either side, tapering to an acute point, retaining rare blued edges and signed WORK OF JANA. The black leather-covered wooden scabbard with large engraved and nielloed mounts decorated in fine, characteristic Circassian motifs. The reverse with pocket for by-knife, signed and dated on the suspension band, WORK OF SAHO (?) 1269 1852/53, with an old collection label inscribed in French, reading: ARAB, TAKEN FROM… in 1876 / ENVOY OF ALI PASHA, GOVERNOR OF…. Dated 1852. Ex- John Eben Byrd III, noted American photographer and skydiver. Minor wear. Overall length 47.1cm/ 18.5”. Condition II
