AUCTIONS IMPERIAL MAY 2024 ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 188:
Description
An elegant interpretation of North Caucasian work. Hilt with horn grips mounted in finely engraved and nielloed silver. The double-edged blade with single offset fullers, struck with the makers name OSMIMAT between birds of prey. In its matching leather-covered wooden scabbard with engraved and nielloed silver mounts. Some wear, loss to leather at reverse. Given the strong resemblance to blades of the well-known maker OSMAN from this region, it is possible there may been a familial relationship between Osman and Osmimat, whose name bears a feminine ending; possibly a daughter who followed in her fathers footsteps. Overall length 50.4cm / 19 7/8". Condition III
