Description
Comprising a massive cleaver of waidblatt form characteristic of the type, the thick, heavy blade expanding continuously from the forte and terminating in a broad, radiused tip with chamfered cutting edge, finely etched at the right forte with the arms of the Electorate of Saxony, with flowering vinework to the left. The staghorn grips with hooked pommel secured by brass bosses, the brass guard finely modeled and engraved and terminating in a birds head, with panels of engraving to either side and prominent ring guard. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with finely profiled brass mounts, the locket engraved with a grotesque face with flowing hair and beard, surmounted by pierced letters abbreviating the Elector’s title, and containing a slip for a knife, fork and bodkin mounted en suite with the cleaver. 17th century or later. Some parts overcleaned, leather rubbed, implements repaired or possibly replaced. Overall length 47 cm / 18 1/2". Condition III
