Description
The hardwood grip of barrel form with fine diagonal grooving to either side, and steel band pommel and ferrule, the shell guard with elaborately profiled borders, and guard with expanded and notched quillon terminals. The fine, straight, double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with a central fuller struck, VIVAT ERNST LUDWIG (LONG LIVE ERNST LUDWIG) to either side, with armorers marks at the shoulder of the ricasso. In its original leather sheath with intact frog. Lare 17th-early 18th century. Minor wear, sheath lacking frog straps and tip. Overall length 49.5 cm / 19 1/2" Ernst Ludwig became Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1678, ruling until his death in 1724. He is known for having emulated the court of King Louis XIV of France, and as a patron of arts and music in the German-speaking lands. Condition III
