A type said to be carried by Gordons Highlanders Volunteers. A fine example, with hardwood grip of characteristic form carved in basket weave motif overall and set with silver studs, the silver pommel and ferrule with deeply engraved bands of flowering thistle, the pommel with a faceted gem, cairngorm or glass. The broad, single-edged and fullered blade with false edge and profiled spine, etched on either side with stands of arms. The leather-covered wooden scabbard with well-engraved scrollwork on the silver mounts, the locket with Saint Andrew and his cross, its knife and fork with studs and gem pommels en suite with the hilt. Second half of the 19th century. Age-toning to steel, wear to leather, one band repaired or replaced in period. Overall length 44.5cm / 17 ??. Condition II
