Description
Likely Spanish or Italian, possibly captured in North Africa The hardwood stock with massive flintlock mechanism engraved overall. The well-forged steel barrel expanding at the belled muzzle, retained to the stock with engraved steel and brass barrel bands, the buttplate likewise of brass, the butt elaborately studded with brass nails. 18th-19th century. Well worn overall. The Barbary Coast of North Africa was well known for piracy from the 16th-19th century, blunderbusses of both Ottoman and continental workmanship saw considerable use there. Overall length 67.5cm / 26 ??. As found.
