Description
A fine example of a small but well-known group of quintessentially Ottoman blades. The hilt with massive rhino grips, tangband and guard all elegantly engraved silver, the guard hallmarked. The fine broad, deeply-curved blade wrought of complex Ottoman wootz, with characteristically superb panels chiseled in relief at the forte in fine rumi vinework enriched with gold panels in sunken reserve and inscribed in gold inlay, MASH? ALLAH! (God?s Blessing!) and TUKLAT ALI! (Trust in Ali) with additional gold inlay panels at the yelman, the spine with elegant borders developing into a single rib running all the way to the tip. The scabbard mounts comprising a large locket, suspension band and chape wrought entirely of silver in complex Ottoman baroque motifs, elaborately embossed and engraved throughout, and retaining most original gilding overall. 18th century. Rubbing to guard, light wear to gold. Overall length 86.5cm / 34 inches. Condition II
