Description

Early Circassian work, the hilt wrought of silver, finely engraved and nielloed in characteristic motifs on a zigzag-matted ground and gilded. The wooden scabbard covered in velvet with shalvar mounts, of separately-applied red leather; a rare and very seldom encountered treatment. The lightly curved and fullered blade handwrought, very well balanced, and struck with a makers mark of double crescents at the right forte. Early 19th century. Minor rubbing to hilt, scabbard as found– suspension band lacking, velvet faded, leather with open seams, galloon lacking. A very similar example belonging to the Caucasian Collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow, appears in E.G. Astvatsaturian, Weapons of the Caucasian Peoples, St. Petersburg, Atlant Publishers, 2016, p. 89, fig. 3 and passim in paintings by Prince G.G. Gagarin. Overall length 91cm/ 35 7/8 inches. Condition V
