Description
The characteristically-complex hilt of Oakeshott Type 2a form, elaborately forged with flattened, profiled and dovetailed steel branches and with rare owners initials, MIC, inscribed at the quillon juncture. With integral thumbring and steel cat?s head inches pommel with raised central button, the ribbed wooden grip retaining its tooled leather wrap. The exceptionally long, double-edged blade of lenticular section with narrow central fullers and struck at the right forte with a series of makers marks. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with profiled brass chape. Second half of the 17th-early 18th century. Areas of old pitting, scabbard opening well worn, rubbing. Overall length 116cm./ 45 5/8 inches. Condition III
